10/21/2023 0 Comments Doppler radar big bear![]() Since hail can cause the rainfall estimates to be higher than what is actually occurring, steps are taken to prevent these high dBZ values from being converted to rainfall. Hail is a good reflector of energy and will return very high dBZ values. These values are estimates of the rainfall per hour, updated each volume scan, with rainfall accumulated over time. Depending on the type of weather occurring and the area of the U.S., forecasters use a set of rainrates which are associated to the dBZ values. EUMETSAT Meteosat images are updated every 15 minutes. Live satellite images are updated every 10 minutes from NOAA GOES and JMA Himawari geostationary satellites. The higher the dBZ, the stronger the rainrate. View LIVE satellite images, rain radar, forecast maps of wind, temperature for your location. Typically, light rain is occurring when the dBZ value reaches 20. The scale of dBZ values is also related to the intensity of rainfall. The value of the dBZ depends upon the mode the radar is in at the time the image was created. Notice the color on each scale remains the same in both operational modes, only the values change. The other scale (near left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in precipitation mode (dBZ values from 5 to 75). One scale (far left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in clear air mode (dBZ values from -28 to +28). Each reflectivity image you see includes one of two color scales. The dBZ values increase as the strength of the signal returned to the radar increases. So, a more convenient number for calculations and comparison, a decibel (or logarithmic) scale (dBZ), is used. Reflectivity (designated by the letter Z) covers a wide range of signals (from very weak to very strong). "Reflectivity" is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver. Rain: 9.The colors are the different echo intensities (reflectivity) measured in dBZ (decibels of Z) during each elevation scan. Drier weather will return by the end of the week with warmer temperatures through the Evening! Highs will cool the mid 70's through the middle of the week with overnight lows generally in the 40's and 50's. Will have to watch where the remnant low tracks as this could bring additional moisture and instability into the region. ![]() Moisture will increase enough Wednesday and Thursday for a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Continued breezy at times and cooler with highs in the upper 70's. As the remnants of Eugene move into the cooler waters of the Pacific, moisture will begin to sheer off in our direction with increasing high cloudiness on Tuesday. We'll remain under mostly sunny skies today with a high near 80 degrees, southwest winds gusting 15-25 mph, especially during the afternoon. Also keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Eugene which will weaken as it moves into the cooler subtropics, but should send some moisture our way through the middle of the week bringing a chance for thunderstorms. Try searching for a city, zip code or point of interest. ![]() Strong SE winds are pushing the tops of the storms.
